When nutrients properly reach the soil beneath the grass, the grass grows properly and remains healthy. Aeration is a vital element to a healthy lawn as it allows air and water to penetrate the soil effectively. The process involves perforating the soil with small holes, and this allows air, water, and other nutrients to penetrate the soil. This results in a stronger and more durable lawn and also helps alleviate soil compaction. Soil compacting is where too many solid particles take up the soil space, preventing proper air, water, and nutrient circulation. This can happen due to various factors, including excess lawn thatch and heavy organic debris that can be buried under the grass surface. 

If you are wondering whether you should aerate your lawn, it's important to know the various factors that determine this. 

For instance, if your lawn gets used heavily, with children and pets running around the yard constantly, it can result in soil compaction. The same holds true if your lawn was established as a part of a newly constructed home, as in this case, the topsoil is often stripped or buried, and the construction compacts the grass. 

If your soil dries out easily or has a spongy feel, it may be because of an excessive thatch problem. Aeration is recommended if the thatch layer is more than one and a half inches deep. 

The sod and soil layering can also make a major difference, as this can result in improper drainage, compacted conditions, and poor root development. 

In all of these cases, it is advisable to aerate the lawn to ensure water and other nutrients flow through the soil and reach the roots easily. 

The best time to aerate a lawn is in early spring or fall.
